Some suspected political thugs attacked
the campaign office of the factional governorship candidate of the
Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State, Mr. Jimoh Ibrahim. The office, which is located on Oyemekun
Road, Akure, the state capital, had some parts of the building housing
it destroyed by the suspected political hoodlums.
It was gathered that the attack was not
unconnected with the factional crisis within the party that had led to
the emergence of two candidates for the forthcoming governorship
election, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) and Ibrahim.
When our correspondent visited the
office on Sunday, it was observed that the PDP flags representing the 18
local government areas of the state were pulled down while a big banner
bearing the picture of Ibrahim as the PDP’s candidate was removed from
the wall of the office.
In his reaction, the Director of
Publicity of Jimoh Ibrahim Campaign Organisation, Mr. Sola Akinuli,
condemned the attack, describing it as unfortunate.
He said, “It was much unexpected from
any quarter that such a barbaric act should rear its ugly head in 2016
when we thought all acts of hooliganism have been thrown into the
dustbin of history.
“We are, therefore, calling on security
agencies to take over the matter in order to forestall future
occurrences. On peace we stand; and that we plead for, from all
quarters.”
When contacted on the telephone, the
Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr. Femi
Joseph, said he was not aware of the incident as of the time of filing
this report.
He said, “I am not aware of the attack. I don’t think the case was reported at any police station in Akure.”
